Song Biography – “Mirror, Mirror”

The Bible is clear about outward looks and charm being unreliable indicators of beauty, and it is rather a god-fearing woman who is truly lovely (Proverbs 31 v 30).

In 1 Peter 3:3 &4 it also says that we should not spend too much time and money on external beauty enhancements but rather to spend our efforts on developing a quiet and gentle spirit, which is precious to God. And yet godly women, who know this (or maybe not), still battle with accepting their looks. It’s as if there is a constant wrestling match going on between two opponents: vanity and self-loathing.

Some women struggle more with vanity. They spend an extraordinary amount of time and money on their daily beauty routine, trying to look as good as possible. Not to mention the cost of constantly buying trendy clothing and flashy jewellery, usually with money they don’t actually have. This, taken to an extreme, is foolish and shallow, as physical beauty is only skin deep. If you focus on this your spirit is sadly neglected and not able to grow.

The other enemy that lurks, ready to pounce every time we look in a mirror, or see a photo of ourselves, is self-loathing. This, taken to an extreme, results in no attempt to make oneself beautiful at all. Plain hairstyles, no make-up, dressing with minimal effort with clothing that does not compliment the figure. This is also not healthy and is often a sign of deeper heart issues that need healing.

Women are never satisfied when they see themselves in a mirror. That is because we look in the wrong mirror. The mirror of social media, magazines, advertisements, and television, and it makes us feel inadequate. We look deeply into it and feel like we fall short of the perfect image portrayed there. We judge ourselves harshly, not realising that perfection is unattainable, especially in the long term.
And this is the hard part – the fact that we all age and lose the looks we once had. When that is gone what do we have left?

So, the answer is to rather look in the correct mirror, the Word, to see our true reflection. What do we see? Do we know who we are in Christ? Do we realise how beautiful and precious a quiet and gentle spirit is? Are we women of grace and poise, radiating God’s love for others? Do we know how much God loves us?
I think the most powerful beauty treatment there is, is to be filled with the Spirit of God. As he shines through us, we radiate His loveliness, and are ourselves lovely, and attractive to people around us.

And so, my hope is that every woman reading this discovers their true, beautiful self by looking in the correct mirror and seeing the true beauty that lies within.

Blessings,
Karah

“That is why we never give up. Though our bodies are dying, our spirits are being renewed every day.”
