Unlawful Love

The fire is dim that once burnt so bright;
A fire so hot, it burnt in the night.
My soul felt it’s heat and melted in shame;
As I kept seeing your face, again and again.

I prayed and I prayed for the quenching within;
I could not carry on, repeating this sin.
And just as I felt I was finally free;
It would flare up and burn, re-igniting in me.

I know it will pass as I accept my place;
You have another to love and embrace.
May her love burn as strong as the fire in me;
May she love you in all that my heart wished could be.
